How many users does Czech Twitter have?

At this year's Webexpo, it was the lecture of Ataxo's Josef Šlerka that proved to be packed with most information, bringing hard data on Czech Twitter. How big is the Czech twittersphere then? How fast is it growing and how do Czech Twitter users behave?

On the last day of the Webexpo conference, Ataxo's Josef Šlerka presented hard data concerning Czech Twitter. From June to September 2009, Ataxo Lab backed up over 700,000 tweets from the Czech Republic via Twitter API. The automatic language detection, as well as the frequency dictionary, helped to depict potential Czech authors. The application working with the data on Czech Twitter users (aptly named “Sparrow”) will be released by the end of the year.

How big is the Czech twittersphere then?

  • 10,628 unique users having published location data (CZ) or having written a tweet in Czech
  • 5,880 users have written at least one tweet in Czech
  • only 2,424 users writing in Czech have mentioned their location
  • there are between 6,000 – 8,000 Twitter users writing in Czech
  • another 1,000 – 2,000 probably prefer English
  • in total, there are approximately 10,000 active Czech users of Twitter

Czech twittersphere dynamics:

  • The number of Czech users grows by 25% every four weeks.
  • However, the number of active users rises by only 5% per week (i.e. there is a significant difference between users who only try Twitter and those beginning to actually use it).
  • Nevertheless, the absolute numbers of tweets rise by 25% approximately every 4 weeks (i.e. the total number of tweets published by Czech Twitter users).

Czech twittersphere characteristics:

  • 2 % are RT
  • 4 % contain a hashtag (#)
  • 21.5 % account for replies and conversations
  • 34.6 % contain a link

Czech twittersphere's activity:

  • The Czechs tend to twitt most often on Thursday and Tuesday, least often on Saturday (while Tuesday is the most popular day on Facebook).
  • Sunday is the least active.
  • The number of tweets rises from the beginning of the month till the end, then it drops and rises again.

The analysis also shows that Twitter trends precede searching trends by up to 24 hours, which implies a countless number of marketing possibilities how to make use of this finding (hint: PPC for daily newspapers).

As a matter of interest, the analytical company comScore has recently published a study on using social networks in Australia. It shows that Australian Twitter has 13,000 members last year in June, rising to 800,000 users in June 2010, representing a hard-to-believe increase by 6,122% (70% Australians are online on social networks). Can a similar growth be also expected in our country?
